S.W.O.T analisis of self- study task 4

S- stregths
W-weaknesses
O- opportunity
T- Threat.

Stregths:

  • Hard worker.
  • Experimental and political/soical approach to work.
  • Know a vast amount of printing techniques and create new ways of printing.
Weaknesses:
  • Hesitant to in digital mediums, have trouble understanding and working with software like  Illustrator.
  • Have a tendency to produce quite dark work, need to define with in my practise personal work for live work.
  • Over thinking and struggling to briefs/ideas. Need to really home in on what the brief is asking and how would this idea communicate.
Opportunity-
  • Getting in touch with papers and other editorials like the New York times. An internship with them at the end of degree?
  • London print club- collaborative studio environments that answer live briefs.
  • Answering live briefs now, allows for practise and for me to find which sectors I am interested in, currently music and editorial.
Threats:
  • Other editorial illustrators,
  • Other studios.
  • Lack of equipment when leaving uni. NEED TO FIND A PRINT STUDIO I can use when left.

Review and refection of own practise and how it could fit into industry. task 3

  • In my work I tend to used more anologe ways of making images, print being the main one.
  • I really like the concept of repetition, pattern, the different methods of printmaking and the atheistic that come from them.
  • My work also tends to take a political or social side to it and this meets with my own personal interests. For example the project I am currently doing 504, I have been resurching into the civil rights movement, 13th amendment and american politics. I find issues like these I get really passionate about and enjoy reaching into.
  • So from this I can see my work fitting into editorial and reportage. The only issue with this is the fast turn around for work. This would be something that I would need to practise as I sometimes struggle with short briefs. The way I make images as well may need to be amended , as print is a time consuming process. So I would need to rely on my photoshop skills more to overlay print textures over images the give the atheistic of print. And the method of print in the passed has been used in protests and propoganda, so there is already a politic back history to this technique. Also from looking a papers like the new york times I can my work fitting in there.
  • I could also see my work fitting into Publishing and book design. I really enjoyed making a zine at the start of this year and was surprised as to how easy it was. And I am going to be undertaking all 3 penguin book cover live briefs , so this will hopefully give me an idea of how to approach the briefs and working with clients in this sector.

Thought bubble.

I was working there as a students abassidor and as part of that I got a free wrist band for the whole day, which was good. During my time there I tried to talk to as many people as possible about there process and what projects they have worked on and as a result I have traded emails with a few people for example Jack Fallows who is planing to put a collective together to make zines and comics within leeds. And collaborations opportunity potentially with Peony Gent and Maria Stoian.
But by going to Thought bubble it has given me a real flavour of the kind of work that tends to sell , methods of getting your details across to potential clients and what kind of things to sell, like badges, prints, giving away free postcards, and the audience that Thought Bubble attracts. In third year it would be a really good idea I think to have a stall up there and to try and sell some work as it woud be a great testing field.
