5A3: Demonstrate an informed understanding of professional context of their practice within the creative industries and cultural environment. (Knowledge & Understanding - Research and Critical Awareness)
I have researched throughout the year into different practitioners, their practices and the context within which they sit. By visiting galleries and events such as print fairs, thought bubble and this has enabled me to have one to one conversations in person to several practitioners including Touching Elbows – Kate Gibb and Will Luz Ask them questions about their practice and how they started out in their carrier and current projects. I also attended talks given by practitioners such as Dominic Kesterson, Louise Lockhart and Dr Me.
Very good.

5B2: Identify and analyse the challenges and opportunities offered by future developments within individually appropriate areas of creative practice. (Cognitive Skills - Problem Analysis, Problem Solving)
I have been keeping an eye open for opportunities, going after them and creating my own as well, for example, asking if artists at Thought Bubble were open for collaboration and exchanging contact details. I am also starting to gain strong links with industry by keeping in touch with Gerry Brakus and passing on my work by hand with contact details on during her visit to ensure that she had my details and that she would remember me. And it worked well, but when emailing her question for the creative report I decide to keep emailing her several times in order to get the response I was after. This resulted in really great answers back and a rote for further investigation into international journalism.
Very good.
5C2: Develop a body of work in response to a defined brief that effectively demonstrates professional working practices in research, planning and communications. (Practical Skills - Visual Quality and Conceptual Development)
Throughout this module I have been developing my understanding of where I may fit into the creative industry. I have been looking down several routes and seem to have no condensed it down to one path that seems to be working but that also challenges me as a practitioner. From this development I have gained a much greater understanding of what editorial illustration is and what it entails.
Very good.
5D2:Employ a range of appropriate professional communication methods to record and present their own creative practice, concerns and ambitions. (Key Transferable Skills, Organisation, Communication and Evaluation)
Gaining and developing a contact within that industry, that has lines to other contacts both UK and international is vital and is one that I need to keep. It is also someone who I can ask advice and support from if needed. Collaborating on Life’s a Pitch was also a good source for transferable skills, as I feel that my presentation skills have improved and we have formed a collective that we are taking further and planning to create work for events such as Thought Bubble.
Very good.

Summative Evaluation (See Evaluation Guidance on next page for more information)

You are required to write a 750 word Summative Evaluation of this module.
Please type up your Summative Evaluation in the box below. Make a PDF of the document and post the PDF as your final post on your OUIL503 blog. Also, please cut and paste the text from this box into the final page(s) of your OUIL502 Project Report.

At the start of this year I was not sure where I could potentially fit into industry, I had several ideas for where for example book publishing or character design but I have found that as my year has progressed I am dealing with and passionate about political and social issues, and building work around topics with the aim of highlighting and making clear to people that these problems within societies are still ever present and need to be addressed. It was after the submission of 504 that I realized the editorial could be a potential path for me to follow and similar topics kept occurring within other modules so I started to develop an aim to try and gain an understanding into what editorial illustration is. I tried to achieve this aim by looking into current practitioners working in this field and how they approached the stories and articles they were given. I also did serval case studies into different papers that I would potentially like to work for and understand their aims and the types of stories they cover. I was also able to gain a contact in Gerry Brakus. When she came to visit the college we were set a mini brief to illustrate an article, and she was really impressed with the image I came up with and loved the narrative and aesthetic. Even though it didn’t meet the brief requirements she did say that she would definitely publish this image to go along side an article based on a short story or creative piece. Editorial is not just about political and social issues there is also creative editorial, which features in magazines like the newstatesman. I decide that before she left I would give her one of the prints and write my details on the back. This was a good move as she then asked me to email her and it was a good way to ensure that she would remember me. And she did, so I decide that she would be a really good contact for the creative report because I wanted to know more about a point she made about the UK press having a conservatism approach to stories whereas Europe are much more open to being daring with the way the tackle stories. In her replies she said that this was down to a fear the readers had but also that after incidents such as the death of Princess Diana and the Leveson Enquire , where private phones where hacked by papers such as the news of the world. Restriction where put in place in order to control the press. So there is a fear of stepping out of line and causing offense. Of course Phone hacking is way beyond the boundaries that the press should go and was wrong but I find it interesting and I want to investigate more into why Journalist felt that it was necessary to go to this extent to get stories. Also I need to find out why the international press are much braver then our own. Over the summer this is something that I am determined to find out and I am going to be emailing Gerry again and asking who would be a good international editor or journalist to contact to help me gain a stronger insight into the dived in journalistic approaches.

It has also been really useful during this module to collaborate with others in my course, and as a result of pitching a theoretical group idea in a collective has encouraged and inspired us to carry on our collective and make our ideas real. So the collective that I am a part of is great as we have a mix of practitioners but the majority of us use similar mediums and processes, also ideas. This is an element that we can use in group projects, for example design piece together. We also have assigned role that suite our individual skill sets for example we have branding, promotion, managing and organizing. One of our aims for the future is to start setting up stalls selling both individual and group work, we are going to try and get a table at thought bubble. This will be a really good platform for us to start on as the festival attracts a wide audience and will help us to identify a specific audience that our work is aimed at.

Overall in this module I struggled at the beginning to find a path with which to direct my further research but found that as I progressed through the other modules it naturally fell into place, and next year I think I am set for a much wider investigation into the editorial industry and going full power to develop the contacts I already have and gaining new ones as I think that this is going to be a key way for me to get started. The main ways that I am going to try and do this is by sending off small postcards of my work and emailing them directly and if possible I can go a vist them. I feel like my personal practice this year has come on leaps and bounds however the professional side still needs work, currently I am seeing myself becoming an freelance illustrator, with the collective on the side, so I need to find a way of branding myself and creating a more striking presence.

The National Print Exhibition.

I was given a flyer by Mick in the print room and he said that I should enter this as they are looking for more students work. This is a perfect opportunity for me ! The national original print exhibition is based in London's bank side gallery right next to the Tate Modern. You can submit up to 6 prints and it costs £8 for a student. Successful entries are exhibited from the 20 September to the 1st October 2017, not very long, but still is a platform. All entries much be digital submitted. I really want to try and create some new work for this , I have time between the submission of this module and the deadline of entries to get something new done.  I aim to really push myself with concept and technique for this one , I plan to approach it in a editorial mannor but submit the final image to the competition. This way I get practise at both my editorial skills and improve my print process. But I plan for the final images to be screen printed and I don't plan for them to be a series rather 6 individual prints given the time constraints but i'll make a definiate decision close to the time.

Quick research into the leveson enquiry.

The Leveson Enquiry was a two pat inquiry to investigate the role of the press and police in the phone hacking scandal on 13th July 2011.  Part  1 of the inquiry examined the culture, practise and ethics of the press and . in particular , the relationship of the press with the public , police and politicians. The inquiry was set up by the coalitions government after the discovery that the phone of missing school girl Milly Dowler had been hacked by The News of The World. The enquire also called up to witness many well know public figures such as Jeremy Paxman (above). The result of the enquire was several regulations actioned and the closer of the News of The World.

Newstateman case study.

The Newstatesman is a magazine that covers political and cultural issues. Founded in April 1913 and past contributors have been , George Orwell, Virginia Woolf, John Berger and Andrew Marr. Now it covers a wide platform from the foreign policy establiment to arts and media. It has moved from a traditional printed newspaper to , today a full digital platform with a website that contains most of the articles for people to browse and read, as well as an online subscription. However the magazine still maintain their printed issues the you can subscribe to and is available across the uk and international.
Looking into the magazine more there seems to be, illustration wise, a lot of portraits of the individuals or group of people the article refers to. I think that this could be down to the traditional method of having a portrait so people can see who the individuals is , however I think if it is a well know person there face may already be well know so perhaps have a more inventive approach towards what they are saying. Illustrating the words, add emphasis the statement rather than the person.

However there is something to be said for a portrait that has a good quality like this one, at first it looks like a photo but then up close you realise it is a painting. This dose give an element of regales to the image , for example it reflects an element of a painting that kings and queens would get. And this dose present a controversial issue in that May is a the PM and was not elected by the public into power. So having a regal portrait shows that she now holds this power and has authority.

pop shot magazine

Popshot Magazine is a reliably new magazine as it was founded in 2008 but is become increasing popular and has already been taking a vast amount of interest.

The key idea behind that magazine initially was that it was a mix of poetry and illustration , that combined both to a designed format. So was essentially a poetry magazine, but since it has increased in its popularity it has developed for a British publication to an international publication. It also now published short storied from new and up-coming writers , flash fiction and these sit along side illustration commissioned from serval collaborators. 24 countries now distribute this magazine including , Australia, Hong Kong, Sweden, Newzeland and Germany.

I have had a subscription to this magazine for a while now and the issues don't come out that often , 2-3 issues a year but when they do some of the illustration and the stories are really good. And it is only recently that I have seen the relevance that this magazine could have to my practise and potential  profession. I remember when Gerry was giving me feedback on my work she said that it would be ideal for creative editorial , and this is what Popshot is a full publication of creative editorial. They do have open submissions for illustrators to submit there work to. I am going to do this over the summer.  One of my aims over the break is to keep setting myself briefs and answering different news stories and short stories in order to improve my thinking when it comes to concepts and context also my overall approach I take to making images.

joohee yoon

Joohee Yoon is an artist who's work I really admire. It is a great mix of colour and pattern , which is placed into context with lots of different applications. Editorial seems to be the main context within which her work sits. This image here was for an article about doctors being given more time to operate. It is a really inventive way of approaching the subject in a way that is both intriguing and become more informative the more you read the story. This is a successful piece of editorial illustration, as incorporates toughs two keep things. It is both the aesthetic and the colours that draw people in to look at the image and the way the colours and details overlap each other increases the overall detail but also replicated that of a screen print. this image could work small scale in print but also large scale for example an A2 poster.

Yoon also has more recently started to design for fabrics. The image above is a scarf within which is seems to have developed a selection of motifs that has then been composed and transferd onto the fabric by hand  to make the final piece. I like how it isn't all cemetrical and still has a strong illustrative element as there looks to be a small narrative that is running through it. It is so intricately detailed and it is really good to see that just because you may mainly work as a editorial illustrator you can still get combinations or collaborate to design fabrics ,packaging and books.

Ideas of what to include in presentation.

How will you fit into industry?

  • Editorial - creative editorial - possibly more political stories.
  • Narrtive/ story illustration.
Where are the holes in your practise?
  • Concepts- can be weak- need to practise more with using simple and recognisable metaphors. I also ned to work on grasping exactly what I am trying to say within the images.
  • Tend to do a lost of spot illustrations - needs to work on creating full images.
What worked, what didn't work?
  • (Visually) Moby, batsford bird, civil rights 504, certain image in 505 - Adding colour to my process.
  • Penguin - weak designs- could be due to a weakness in composition.
How did collaboration go ?
  • Well, two people made communication and organisation easier for both partys involved.
  • could have produced more work , we where really ambitious to being with but time contraints limited us.
How can you take control of your practise?
  • Networking is the key, contact more people specifically international magazines and papers- develop an understanding of what they are looking for. Could mention about the divide between britain and the rest of europe, conservatism. A nervousness. Levison enquiry - the regulation that have been out in place. gage a better understanding of the debate.
How do you make your work?
  • very process driven.
  • Lino to digital editing then screen printing.
  • Editing digitally saves time and allows me to be more versatile with shapes and line I have created.
  • I am going to have to adapt my process in order to fit with the time constraints that editorial has because at the moment my process is way to slow and needs adapting to fit the fast turn around required for this field.
  • This could mean moving towards a more digital process in order to help me creates images faster.
  • I need to take more risks with composition , I tend to go for the same layout but in 505 i tried this and it paid off so need to carry on doing this.
possible USP's-
'-knowledge of print.
- hard worker
- mixing traditional with digital.

The independent - cases study

The independent was founded in the 1990's and was nicknamed the indy broadsheet. Originally a printed paper , it printed it's last edition in march 2016 and now has moved to a completely digital platform. It covers top news stories to an Indy/ life section. It is really interesting the risk the paper has taken to move from the traditional method of papers being distributed to going fully online. This could have risked loosing a vast readership however it seems to have increased. It has catered for the technological advances that are constantly happening. The paper now can be accessed on phones and other devise on the go, rather than having to go to a shop and buy the paper. It also makes it easily available for young audiences and opens up to a whole new generation. Thus increasing it readership whilst informing a wider audience. It is a relatively young paper compared to others and this could be why is it more willing to take bigger leaps , however dose this signal the start of the death of the printed paper? The paper is also free to access online so where dose the funding come from?
In my opinion I really like the independent because it has much more potential for research a massive audience ,  and it keeping up to date with current developments and by doing so it stories will get around more compared to that a payed printed paper.  They also write some really good and important stories and is good material if you are illustrating an article for them.
