- Within my work currently I feel I am stuck between creating images for editorial
or publishing, and going down the route of really immersing myself in
print making and process and creating textiles and patterns for product,
packaging and clothing. This talk was helpful and helped me with
confidence and decide how best to move forward.
- Kings Road Gallery.
- Within
the design studio's the work it split up. Design teams work in
collaboration from concept boards and test and make ideas and products
that could work. They practically test ideas before creating for
mass.
- Weather
working for big companies or with independent artist the team at Anthropologie
works the same. They sole aim to meet their core aims of maintaining on
trend with the key consumer and maintaining a sustainable approach.
- Sustainability
is a key part of Anthropologie's ethos and is integral to how they produce
products and promote the company.
- A whale
was a feature that happened across most of the stores last year. The whale
was made up of recycled materials that where fixed to wire and embroided
onto. Once the whale was finished with in the London store it was taken
down to the National history museum and held there on exhibition.
- Recycled
products are also used within store as well as display cabinets and
tables.
- Anthropologie
do have internships which is something that I could be really interested
in , especially in the practical design team. But also it would be good as
a long term ambition to design products in collaboration with the independently.
- It was
really good to have a collective which I helped run and one to one chat with Nicola. She originally
has a degree in politics but now works as a senior part of marketing team.
In the collective chat it was good to talk in more detail about the
companies ethics, how the different teams worked and the growth of
Anthropologie.

Hanbury post 3 - It's nice that and No Brow
- The Graduates 2018
- It's Nice That partnerships with brands.
- They have two meetings a week when they look at illustrators to feature in the magazine.
- In the submissions, they look for personality, uniqueness, and being brave with what you are communicating and using to do this.
- Own stories and own ideas
- Instagram- treat it like an online portfolio
- Twitter (not so much)
- Email- ask to meet for advice, work comes first.
- L cafe art fair.
- belona book fair Italy.
- Trends that are happening at the moment:
- Editorial
- Illustrated nonfiction
- Year of the women
- Tips:
- Persistence
- Keep creating your own work - self-initiated briefs.
- Don't be shy about creating stories.
- INTERNING !!!
- Get to know what they look for.
- Approach small mags that you like.
- Submission details of work.
- When emailing It's nice that - lead with an image or two images, link.
- If you could - it's nice that.co.uk

- Looking into other paths, interning at it's nice that could be really good! It would give me an experiment in creative editorial and understand how being a creative can work in that environment.

Hanbury post 3 - Ricky Richards
- Pronto projects - timely projects for example notable deaths , large media releases , cultural movements , natural disasters and political events. SELF INITIATED PROJECTS - I don't do enough of these !!!
- Influence of imputs.
- Instead of using social media platforms send one email a day to someone who you want to work with would be more effective.
- This poster below was Richards responce to a political issue involving child soliders. He later posted the images on social media and it went viral.
- Respoding to issues imetetly garentees that the audiance already has highened awareness and so would be listening.
Hanbury post 1 Blink (Helen) and Big Active (Greg). notes
- Before the talk, I had a quick chat with Helen from Blink and asked her about some of her clients who do traditional print and the kind of work they get. She mentioned an artist named Rob Hunter who designed an album cover for Elbow's Little Fictions. But she said jobs that require physical print are few and far between. But those ideas can lead on into a more extensive project where the illustrator would collaborate with an animator to make GIFs, short animations, and animated posters.
- This point about illustrations being much more digitally based than physically ran through both talks. An illustrator who is aiming to work in anything such as editorial should be able to work in collaboration and it seems it would help to have some animation skills.
- Trends that they are starting to notice included the decline of print-based advertising, the vast majority of it now is on digital platforms such as social media. But Instagram is peaking.
- Both these agencies look for individual style and uniqueness. Imagery that has a deep level of emotional intelligence.
- Ideas over style.
- Big brands often don't pay, but they would up your profile, however, ensure you get the credit.
- In terms of my practise , social media and digtial skills are really lacking.
- After the talk, I gave them a print with a business card and got both their emails.
