Newstateman case study.

The Newstatesman is a magazine that covers political and cultural issues. Founded in April 1913 and past contributors have been , George Orwell, Virginia Woolf, John Berger and Andrew Marr. Now it covers a wide platform from the foreign policy establiment to arts and media. It has moved from a traditional printed newspaper to , today a full digital platform with a website that contains most of the articles for people to browse and read, as well as an online subscription. However the magazine still maintain their printed issues the you can subscribe to and is available across the uk and international.
Looking into the magazine more there seems to be, illustration wise, a lot of portraits of the individuals or group of people the article refers to. I think that this could be down to the traditional method of having a portrait so people can see who the individuals is , however I think if it is a well know person there face may already be well know so perhaps have a more inventive approach towards what they are saying. Illustrating the words, add emphasis the statement rather than the person.

However there is something to be said for a portrait that has a good quality like this one, at first it looks like a photo but then up close you realise it is a painting. This dose give an element of regales to the image , for example it reflects an element of a painting that kings and queens would get. And this dose present a controversial issue in that May is a the PM and was not elected by the public into power. So having a regal portrait shows that she now holds this power and has authority.
